Lack of diversity in lawns is leading to a lack of equity and inclusion for flora and fauna that are simply looking for a place to live. In the suburbs, monoculture lawns of bermuda grass and fescue grass are creating a wasteland for insects, birds, and small animals. A lawn of a naturally occurring mixture of grass and broadleaf plants provides habitat for a broad range of fauna. We have noticed an increase in birds in our yard in response to the improved habitat as the birds find more insects and seeds to eat among the various grasses and broadleaf plants. The takeaway: an easy way to help the environment (and save money) is to let grow what will grow in your yard.
