Sometime people are just so good that it is important to point them out. MacKenzie Scott seems to be such a person. She had a fortune of 40 billion dollars after her divorce from Jeff Bezos. According to an article in the WSJ today, she has so far donated 28 billion dollars to various causes. She often finds obscure organizations that wouldn’t have the means or widespread interest to mount a large fund-raising campaign. There isn’t a place to apply, and often the recipients just get a message out of the blue. In the same article, it was noted that the average yearly giving among the super wealthy is 1.2%. If we assume an average rate of return of 7%, that means the super wealthy are just getting richer and richer. And that may be why they are super wealthy to begin with – they are just plain greedy. So it is nice to see someone who just has been fortunate and is happy to help out others. No publicity required or wanted. MacKenzie Scott – a good person.
