AN EXTINCTION EVENT

Most literate or informed people are aware that as the human population increases, there is an effect on the environment that is leading to the extinction of many species around the world. Evidence suggests that this is not a recent phenomenon. ( I had personally assumed that this was a rare occurrence prior to the last few thousand years.) However, fossil studies have suggested that the arrival of humans in an area corresponded to the extinction of megafauna such as the Wooly Mammoth, Giant Sloth, Dire Wolf, and American Lion.

The further away from Africa, the greater the effect on the Megafauna, possibly because the animals had less time to become acclimated to the presence of humans (and the need to be fearful of them).

There is nothing profound here, just sadness for all the other creatures on the face of the earth that have to deal with humanity.
